Tasting Notes
Château Rahoul 2017 unveils its appealing, concentrated and bright appearance. The fresh, fruit-laden bouquet, dominated by red berries, gains in stunning intensity, defined on the finish by a hint of spice. Initially very smooth, the wine develops fleshy, fruity, spicy texture on the palate, revealing lovely depth, underscored by lovely ripe, delicate tannins. The balance and freshness which define this wine culminate in an attractive, delicious finish.
The Vintage
In vineyards almost two weeks ahead of schedule, the April frosts unequally damaged Château Rahoul. Plots usually destined to the second wine were badly affected. Flowering was even on non-frost vines. Moderate August and September temperatures, combined with cool nights, allowed phenolic compounds to become concentrated, whilst preserving freshness during the early maturation of the berries. The reds growing on sandy-gravel and gravel clay soils were picked in the middle of September, on similar dates to 2011, more than two weeks earlier than the norm. Volumes are lower than we had hoped at the beginning of the year but there is real quality with smooth, sweet Merlot and very appealing full-bodied, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon
